A Year of Firsts
You would think that there would not be much ‘firsts’ left for the icon herself - Naomi Campbell - just based on the fact that she’s been in the game since the 80’s. But the supermodel who has reigned supreme over magazine covers and runways for over 30 years has just landed her first beauty contract as the new face of Nars Cosmetics for its Spring 2019 campaign!
“Naomi is a living icon and brings such strong personality to the camera. She and I are like family. I have known her since the very beginning of her career. From the start, I have admired her, her beauty and her style”, said Francois Nars, the company’s founder who also photographed Naomi for the brand.
Now let’s not get our girl twisted; she’s definitely been offered beauty contracts in the past but has humbly declined them as they did not offer her the same as her white counterparts. At 48 years old, Naomi Campbell is still breaking barriers and experiencing “firsts”.
Naomi Campbell has been a voice for diversity and inclusion in the industry. In 1988, she was the first black woman to appear on the cover of French Vogue, and later in 1989, she was the first black model to grace American Vogue’s coveted September issue.
The simple fact that she’s only now getting her first beauty campaign in 2018 is evidence that more diversity in the fashion and beauty world is necessary.
